Many creators imagine "the algorithm" as something that dislikes them. In reality, Instagram uses many ranking systems with one shared goal: show each person content they are likely to enjoy, so they keep using the app. If your content keeps people watching and interacting, Instagram shows it to more people. If it does not, your reach shrinks.
Here is how it works, in plain language.
There Is No Single Algorithm
Instagram has explained that Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore and Search each have their own ranking system, because people use each part of the app differently.
| Surface | Main purpose | Who sees your content |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | Updates from accounts you follow, plus recommendations | Mostly followers |
| Stories | Staying connected with people you care about | Followers |
| Reels | Entertainment and discovery | Mostly non-followers |
| Explore | Discovering new accounts and topics | Non-followers |
The Signals That Matter
For each post, Instagram predicts how likely a viewer is to interact with it. It uses signals such as:
- Your activity: what the viewer has liked, saved, shared and watched before.
- The post itself: how quickly and how much other people are engaging with it, its topic, its length and when it was posted.
- The relationship: whether the viewer often likes, comments on or DMs your account.
- Information about you: how people have interacted with your recent content.
The Three Biggest Signals for Reaching New People
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has named three signals as especially important:
- Watch time: do people watch your video, and do they rewatch it?
- Sends per reach: how many viewers share it with friends by DM?
- Likes per reach: what share of viewers like it?
He has also said that likes matter more for reaching your existing followers, while sends matter more for reaching people who do not follow you yet.
Engagement Speed and the Test Audience
New posts, especially Reels, are first shown to a small group. If that group reacts strongly, Instagram widens distribution step by step. That is why the first hour matters, and why many Reels stall at a few hundred views. Learn how to fix that in stuck at 200 views?
How Each Surface Ranks Content
Feed
Ranks posts from accounts you follow based on your relationship with them, your interest in the topic, and recency. Recommended posts from accounts you do not follow are mixed in.
Stories
Prioritises accounts you interact with most: those whose Stories you watch, reply to or DM.
Reels
Focuses on entertainment. The key question is whether a viewer will watch to the end, rewatch, share or like. Most Reels views come from non-followers, which makes Reels the main growth tool. See our Reels strategy.
Explore
Recommends content similar to what you have engaged with before, from accounts you do not follow.
What Can Limit Your Reach
- Breaking the Community Guidelines or Recommendation Guidelines
- Reposting content from other creators without adding anything (Instagram favours original content)
- Videos with visible watermarks from other apps
- Low-resolution or blurry uploads
- Spammy behaviour such as mass following or bots
You can check whether your content is eligible to be recommended under Settings → Account status. If you think you are restricted, read our shadowban fix guide.
How to Work With the Algorithm
- Hook fast: grab attention in the first 2 seconds.
- Be original: create your own content instead of reposting.
- Make shareable content: relatable, useful or surprising.
- Post when your audience is active: see the best time to post in India.
- Reply quickly: conversations in the comments help early engagement.
- Stay in your niche: it helps Instagram find the right test audience.
- Try Trial Reels: test content with non-followers before sharing with your audience.
Small accounts are not punished. They are simply tested with smaller groups at first. Strong reactions from that group are how small accounts break out.
Starting From Zero?
If you have a small following, getting that first burst of engagement is hard. Many creators combine the steps above with a small boost so new posts look active from the start and profile visitors see a credible account.
